European passenger traffic for Q1 reveals two-speed aviation market

European airports trade body ACI EUROPE released its March/Q1 traffic report, providing the first substantial indication of how airport traffic is performing in 2012.

The overall passenger traffic at European airports increased by +3.5% in March 2012 compared with March 2011. However, the overall freight traffic among European airports remained negative at -4.0% in March 2012 compared with March 2011. Aircraft movements (an indicator of airline capacity) at European airports also decreased by -2.3%.

In terms of the year to date, comparing traffic results for Q1 2012 with the same period in 2011 reveals an average increase of +3.4% for passengers, -4.1% for freight traffic and a dip in total aircraft movements of -1.7%.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General ACI EUROPE commented “Europe has really become a two-speed aviation market, with EU airports only reporting +1.7% average growth in passenger traffic during Q1, while non-EU airports in Russia, Turkey, Norway, Iceland and elsewhere are surging ahead with +11.5% Q1 growth. This is damning evidence of the impact of the unresolved sovereign debt crises and punitive national aviation taxes.”

He added “March passenger figures continue to reveal strong resilience for large hubs – with the exception of those in Greece, Spain and Italy, where many airports are losing traffic. Passenger growth at regional airports is generally weakening, reflecting their exposure to the present economic environment.”

Airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year (Group 1), airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers (Group 2), airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers (Group 3) and airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year (Group 4) reported an average increase of +4.3%, +4.8%, +0.6% and +2.0% respectively when compared with March 2011.

Breaking down the passenger traffic results for Q1 into traffic groups reveals an average increase of +4.2% for Group 1 and for Group 2, while Group 3 is at +1.0% and Group 4 +2.7%.

Examples of airports that experienced the highest increase in passenger traffic per group, when comparing March 2012 with March 2011, include:

GROUP 1 airports – Istanbul IST (+19.9%), Moscow DME (+17.1%), London LHR (+6.9%), Munich (+6.0%) and Paris CDG (+5.9%)

GROUP 2 airports – Moscow SVO (+20.7%), Berlin TXL (+18.6%), Manchester (+13.7%), Vienna (+8.6%) and Istanbul SAW (+8.0%)

GROUP 3 airports – Budapest OTP (+15.8%), Marseille (+15.8%), Izmir (+10.5%), Stuttgart (+7.7%) and Kiev (+7.5%)

GROUP 4 airports – Arad (+1,260.7%), Bourgas (+71.0%), Vilnius (+56.2%), Zadar (+52.7%) and Liége (+40.2%)

The 'ACI EUROPE Airport Traffic Report – March/Q1 2012' includes 173 airports in total. These airports represent over 88% of European passenger traffic.
