U.S. Citizen International Travel up One Percent in March 2013

U.S. citizen outbound totaled 5.1 million travelers for the month and 13.2 million for the Quarter Travel was flat for the Quarter

March 2013/2012 Comparisons
U.S. travel to overseas markets(1) totaled 2.53 million, up three percent in March.
Regional results were:
  • Europe, 797,000 travelers, down three percent
  • Caribbean, 696,000 travelers, up seven percent
  • Asia, 399,000 travelers, up seven percent
  • Central America, 268,000 travelers, up almost seven percent
  • South America, 160,000 travelers, flat
  • Middle East, 129,000 travelers, up five percent
  • Oceania, 55,000 travelers, up 12 percent
  • Africa, 31,000 travelers, down three percent
Overseas travel was up almost one percent for the quarter.
U.S. travel to North American markets totaled 2.56 million, flat compared to February 2012.
  • Mexico, 1.9 million travelers, down four percent; however, air travel (691,000) was up 11 percent
  • Canada, 666,000 travelers, up 10 percent; air travel (233,000) was up three percent
Travel to Canada and Mexico was flat for the quarter.
March 2013 YTD Market Share
U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 48 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.
  • Europe, a 14 percent share;
  • Caribbean, a 13 percent share;
  • Asia, an eight percent share;
  • Central America, a five percent share;
  • South America, a three percent share;
  • Middle East, a three percent share;
  • Oceania, a one percent share, and
  • Africa, almost a one percent share
North American markets received 52 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.
  • U.S. travel to Mexico a 40 percent share; and
  • Canada almost a 13 percent share.

Total departure travel, inclusive of all modes, to Canada and Mexico is reported in addition to the air-only subtotals. The timing of this report is dependent on receipt of aggregate data from Stats Canada and Banco de Mexico.
