U.S. Citizen International Travel was Down Four Percent in April 2013

U.S. citizen outbound totaled 4.4 million travelers for the month and 17.7 million YTD
Year-to-Date Travel was Down One Percent
April 2013/2012 Comparisons
U.S. travel to overseas markets(1) totaled 2.2 million, down two percent in April and flat for the year.
Regional results were:

  • Europe, 815,000 travelers, down two percent
  • Caribbean, 545,000 travelers, down six percent
  • Asia, 353,000 travelers, down three percent
  • Central America, 180,000 travelers, up one percent
  • South America, 125,000 travelers, flat
  • Middle East, 119,000 travelers, up six percent
  • Oceania, 41,000 travelers, up nine percent
  • Africa, 25,000 travelers, down four percent
U.S. travel to other North American markets totaled 2.23 million, down five percent compared to April 2012.
  • Mexico, 1.6 million travelers, down three percent; however, air travel (495,000) was up five percent
  • Canada, 647,000 travelers, down 10 percent; air travel (240,000) was down one percent
Travel to Canada and Mexico was down one percent for the year.

U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 48 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.
  • Europe, a 15 percent share;
  • Caribbean, a 13 percent share;
  • Asia, an eight percent share;
  • Central America, a five percent share;
  • South America, a three percent share;
  • Middle East, a three percent share;
  • Oceania, a one percent share, and
  • Africa, almost a one percent share
North American markets received 52 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.
  • U.S. travel to Mexico a 39 percent share; and
  • Canada a 13 percent share.

OTTI reports U.S. outbound travel monthly by all modes, expanding beyond air-only traffic. Total departure travel, inclusive of all modes, to Canada and Mexico is reported in addition to the air-only subtotals. The timing of this report is dependent on receipt of aggregate data from Stats Canada and Banco de Mexico.
