WATG, Rockwell Group To Fulfill Trump Vision for New Rio Hotel

LOS ANGELES—Architecture and design firms WATG and Rockwell Group, along with landscape architecture firm Witkin-Hults Design Group have been tasked with creating the newest development from Trump Hotel Collection, the Trump Hotel Rio de Janiero.

Plans for the 13-story, 171-room Trump Rio were unveiled by Donald Trump Jr., EVP/development and acquisitions and Jim Petrus, COO of Trump Hotel Collection at the annual Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) being held here this week at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live.

The hotel is the Collection’s first property in South America. Rio de Janeiro-based owner LSH Barra S.A. and development consultant Polaris Brazil are partnered with Trump Hotel Collection to bring the project to fruition.
Located in the Jardim Oceanico sub-district of the Barra da Tijuca borough and facing a beach, the only luxury hotel is expected to open in 2016, in time for the area’s hosting of a majority of the Summer Olympics taking place there that year.

Handling interior design, Rockwell Group plans to infuse a “vibrant and contemporary aesthetic” into the hotel’s public spaces and guestrooms, such as an amorphous sculptural front desk inspired by Rio’s mountainous landscape, travertine walls with brass inlays in the lobby and event spaces, and guestroom furnishings that are modern yet organic. “Our design concept for Trump Rio combines Modernism with the energy and creativity of this burgeoning city,” stated David Rockwell, founder and president of Rockwell Group.
Guestrooms will feature ocean or mountain views, with gray marble floors that seamlessly adjoin private outdoor balconies and terraces. Eleven suites, ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 sq. ft., will feature private plunge pools on private patios with ocean views. The Presidential Suite will offer 2,992 sq. ft. of space.

In addition, Trump Rio will offer approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space. Amenities will include a 4,000-sq.-ft. pool deck with private VIP cabanas overlooking an infinity pool with beachfront views; a 4,000-sq.-ft. nightclub; 2,200-sq.-ft. spa, and a 2,000-sq.-ft. fitness center.

“Trump Hotel Collection has formulated an aggressive international development strategy to acquire 30 properties within the collection by 2020,” stated Petrus.“Trump Rio embodies this vision perfectly, as the first luxury hotel to emerge in a burgeoning area of a growing market such as South America.”
