11 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

1) QF job cuts speculation stirs walkout rumours

Qantas refuses to confirm nor deny the fourth quarter results to be released this Thursday will include the axing of 5000 Australian jobs within the company, which has Qantas staff nervous.  The speculation arises after Qantas boss Alan Joyce said last week that ”hard decisions”  lay ahead for the airline which will not be popular with everyone, as he seeks to reduce $2 billion in operating costs.  A Qantas employee told KarryOn they are all worried about their jobs and morale is low, because they are getting no consultations from the union or suggestions from management that they will keep their jobs.  There are also talks that more customer service staff will be added to cover Thursday through to the weekend in fear of staff walkouts.  Stay tuned to KarryOn to find out what Qantas will reveal on Thursday.

2) Rocky Mountaineer enters USA

Rocky karryOnFor the first time, Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer will depart and arrive in the United States with the launch of their new Coastal passage Route.  The first departure for the season on 10 May 2014 will be the company’s fifth rail route, with the expanded schedule connecting Seattle and Vancouver, BC enroute to the majestic Candian Rockies.  The Coastal Package will offer Rocky Mountaineer’s award winning GoldLeaf Service as well as SilverLeaf Service.  Travellers can package the rail journey with the popular inside passage cruising as Alaskan Cruise sailings departing from Seattle with Holland America Line or Norwegian Cruise Line.

3) Australian outbound travel remains strong

Australians are active travellers when seeking international holidays, accounting for over 30 percent of the total population. According to recent statistics, Asia takes the largest chunk of the market with a whopping 45 percent. 5) Visit California hijacks YouTube with Dream 365 Project

Visit California will use a collection of videos to highlight the abundance of iconic, as well as off-the-beaten-path, experiences for travellers to explore in California as it floods YouTube with videos in its new Dream 365 Project.  The “24 Hours. 24 Dreams” videos will feature every hour starting midnight 1 March 2014 and will focused on inspiring and celebrating Californians who have made their dreams possible in the Golden State.  “24 Hours. 24 Dreams.” is the start of the campaign launch which will be backed by memes, tweets, time-lapses, photos and more.

6) Daily Chicago service EK’s 9th in USA

Extending its USA network, Emirates has added a daily direct service from the Dubai hub to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, Terminal 5 starting 5 August 2014.  Chicago will be the airline’s ninth gateway in the USA, with commencement of its services to Boston, Massachusetts starting 10 March 2014.  The service will operate as flight EK 235 from Dubai and EK 236 from Chicago, on a Boeing 777-200LR.  The airline will not only carry passengers to Chicago but up to 17 tonnes of cargo to further increase the trade opportunities between Dubai and Chicago..

7) AirAsia sale a sizzler

Low cost airline AirAsia has release its Free Seats Season Sale, including promo sale seats on sale until 2 March 2014.  More than half a million free seats are up for grabs (excludes taxes and charges), with a further 1.8 million low fare promo seats on selected AirAsia flights.  The sale is valid for travel from 1 October 2014 – 30 April 2015.  In conjunction with the promo campaign, the long haul, low fare carrier affiliate of the AirAsia Group; AirAsia X will be offering fares from as low as RM169 (all-in, one way) on Economy and RM669 (all-in, one way) on our award winning Premium seats to destinations in Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Nepal and China from Kuala Lumpur.

8) Sochi Tourism post Olympics’ booms

The Winter Olympics may be over but the city of Sochi in Russia looks like it is a booming tourist city as crowds continue to explore the city and surrounds post Games.  Visitors have decided to stay on in the city and venture to its more central area from Adler, where the Olympic Park is, and Krasnaya Polyana, where the ski resorts are located.  Those workers and volunteers at the Games have also got the time now to explore Sochi now the events are over.  During the Games, 3.5 million passengers were transported on Russian Railways to the greater Sochi area on 46 trains.

10) InterContinental Fiji double whammy wins

The prestigious AON Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards has recognised theInterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa for two awards, Spa and Wellness’ and Josaia Baleinatewa (affectionately known as ‘Little Jo’) for ‘Frontliner of the Year’.  Held on Denarau Island in Nadi on last Friday night, the InterContinental Fiji’s nominations represented two of their signature elements, ‘Spa InterContinental’ and the resort’s exceptional staff.  InterContinental Fiji’s General Manager, Scott Williams said it was an honour to be a recipient of such esteemed awards.

11) Bowen’s missing Big Mango mystery solved

Bowen’s famous tourist attraction, the Big Mango, has been located after being stolen earlier this week.  The removal of the ten-tonne, three-storey piece of fruit has been revealed to be a stunt by fast-food chain, Nandos.  Nandos have released a statement, promising to “take good care of the mango and would return it to its rightful position soon(ish)”.  As rumors spread of the missing mango, social media lit up with chatter of its disappearance, and one person even placed an ad on Gumtree offering to sell the big mango for $5000, or trade it for the Big Banana from Coffs Harbour
