In Partnership with Alabama Tourism Department National Geographic Disclosed ‘Geotoaurism Project

In alliance with the Alabama Tourism Department, the National Geographic Society disclosed a new four state geotoaurism project in Montgomery. The project includes a National Geographic created 37 inch by 25 inch printed brochure with 200 points of interest from the four state regions.

341 Alabama listings are featured on the U.S. Gulf Coast States Geotourism interactive website atusgulfcoaststatesgeotourism.com and on a mobile app. Officials said that the project is planned to highlight local natural, cultural and historical locations in the gulf coast states of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Alabama Tourism Department regional director, Grey Brennan, called the project a benefitial for the state.

More than a year ago, the tourism project started with a call for organizations and citizens to nominate local points of interest and a formation of the U.S. Gulf Coast States Geotourism Stewardship Council. Above 100 Alabamians submitted nominations.

Among the listings in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area, the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, Gulf State Park and Alabama’s Offshore Artificial Reef Zone.

Similar geotourism projects around the world are developed by the National Geographic society including the Western Balkans in Southeast Europe, Eastern Newfoundland and California’s Redwood Coast.

Geotourism is known as tourism that develops the geographical character of a place, its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and welfare of its residents.
