Munich Airport's surfing extravaganza brings Hawaiian vibe

After scoring a huge hit in the past three summers with surfing fans, airport staff and visitors, the 2014 edition of Munich Airport's surfing extravaganza, "Surf & Style," will bring a Hawaiian vibe to the Munich Airport Center (MAC) from July 30 until August 24.
Pumps create a standing wave 10 meters wide and 1.5 meters high in the 200 square meter basin. The facility is open daily free of charge to all from 3:00 until 8:15 p.m., with groups of up to 10 persons at a time admitted in 45-minute time windows. Children must be at least eight years of age to take part. Twice a day, from 3:00 to 3:45 and again from 6:00 to 6:45, beginners slots will be offered with a support bar in place. Professional surfing instructors will be on hand during the free sessions to watch and offer tips as needed. All of the necessary equipment such as boards, wetsuits, etc. can be borrowed free of charge.
Again this year, three-day camps for children and teens will be offered weekdays, where aspiring young surfers will get tips on riding waves from experienced instructors at all levels from beginner to advanced. Due to popular demand, advance registration is required at www.munich-airport.de/surfandstyle for the free sessions and camps at this year's Surf & Style. In addition, the three-day surfing camps are subject to a processing fee of 15 euros. This includes admission to the surfing basin, professional supervision and fruit and beverages to refresh the young surfers.
Also back as the competitive highlight of the event is the European championship in Stationary Wave Riding, which will be held on August 9 and 10. Munich's "urban surfers", who hone their skills in Munich's chilly Eisbach stream, will be up against the international river surfing elite, competing for prize money totaling 10,000 euro
Creating the ideal setting for watching the surfers – or joining them – is an inviting beach area with palm trees, lounge chairs and a cocktail bar. There is also a grandstand with seating for up to 500 spectators. For those who want to join in the fun, all they need can be borrowed conveniently and free of charge at poolside. For those attending the event, free parking is available in the P20 car park for up to five hours.
