Amadeus wins 10th annual Red Hat Innovation Award for outstanding and innovative use of Red Hat solutions

MADRID - Amadeus has been awarded "Cloud Innovator of the Year" by open source solutions provider Red Hat, for a project it describes as providing "a wonderful example of what is possible with open source."

This commendation follows the successful launch of Amadeus Cloud Services last June, supported by an open source project Amadeus developed in collaboration with Red Hat on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.

The Red Hat Innovation Awards honor customers and partners for their outstanding and innovative use of Red Hat solutions, and Amadeus will be recognized this week at the 2016 Red Hat Summit, taking place in San Francisco, USA, from June 28th – 30th.

"We are very proud to receive this award, recognizing how Amadeus Cloud Services is shaping the future of travel through technology," said Dietmar Fauser, Vice President Architecture, Quality and Governance, Amadeus. "This is also recognition for the smart, innovative, agile team of developers we have across Amadeus globally. We have publicly adopted an industry-defining cloud strategy to help our customers achieve rapid time to market, better scalability and improved performance. Through Amadeus Cloud Services, our solutions are also available to run on our own global private cloud, as well as on multiple public cloud providers depending on customer choice and business need. Amadeus' container-based cloud solution decreases system latency to enable better customer service, increase platform availability, streamline operations through automation, and reduce time to market for new services."

"Open source technologies – and Red Hat solutions – are enabling exciting innovations in organizations around the world," said Marco Bill-Peter, Vice President, Customer Experience and Engagement, Red Hat. "We've been fortunate to work closely with Amadeus on so many levels based on a common technological vision and goals. Because we have done this with open source, this level of collaboration and innovation can benefit the broader community and enables Red Hat to deliver significant business value to other customers. Amadeus Cloud Services is a wonderful example of what is possible with open source."

Over the last 12 months, Amadeus Airline Cloud Availability was developed using Amadeus Cloud Services technology. This innovative solution solves the challenge of ever increasing flight search volumes. Airline 'look-to-book' ratios – average number of search requests before a flight booking is actually made – were previously as low as 10:1. Today, these can easily run to 1,000:1. Amadeus Airline Cloud Availability was successfully piloted by Lufthansa in 2015, easily absorbing a 20 fold increase in transaction volumes. The solution is now in production with Lufthansa.

Amadeus is also using Amadeus Cloud Services as the foundation for its collaboration with InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) to develop a next-generation Guest Reservation System (GRS). This will revolutionize the technological foundations of the global hospitality industry.  It will result in a first of its kind, standardized, scalable and flexible global technology ecosystem for the hospitality industry, which will enhance value for IHG's guests, owners and hotels.

"Amadeus Cloud Services significantly simplifies our historic approach to operations and meets demand for distributed computing with multi-data center capability," said Olaf Schnapauff, Chief Technology Officer for Amadeus Global Operations. "Operating in the cloud enables us to deliver automated recovery, removes the micro-management of underlying infrastructure, and makes more efficient and effective management use of our applications generally. Crucially, it delivers far superior responsiveness, driving and enabling 'always on' ultra-high availability of our products, services and solutions."

For the 2016 Red Hat Innovation Awards, nominations were received with judges selecting one winning project in each of six categories that exemplified the most innovative achievements used to answer complex IT challenges with Red Hat solutions. From among the category winners, an overall 2016 Red Hat Innovator of the Year will be selected by the community through online voting. Voting will open at 9 a.m. PT on Monday, June 27, and close at 11:59 p.m. PT on Wednesday, June 29. The winner will be announced during an awards ceremony on Thursday, June 30, at the 2016 Red Hat Summit.
