The Randwick city council has enforced a total ban on alcohol consumption on the Coogee beach in Sydney for entire summer, after almost 10,000 revellers destroyed the beach with 15 tonnes of garbage during Christmas Day party on 25th December.

The Coogee beach is one of the most popular destinations of Sydney for the backpackers. After consulting with the police from New South Wales, the council has informed on Tuesday, 27th December that ‘the poor and inappropriate behaviour of a few’ during Christmas forced them to take the decision to ban alcohol until the end of summer. They also informed that the ban would take effect from Thursday, 29th December.

The mayor of Randwick, Noel D’Souza informed that the ‘devastation’ caused ‘phenomenal’ anger among the citizen. According to sources, most of the revellers were from the United Kingdom.

Noel D’Souza informed that the poor and inappropriate behaviour of a few on Christmas Day have forced council to introduce a total alcohol ban for the area for summer. He also informed that it is disappointing that they had to take such a strong stance but they needed to reassure the community that they can feel safe when visiting and enjoying the jewel in the crown of Randwick city, Coogee beach.

After the party, several locals lodged their complaints to the council on Monday, 26th December. People could not walk by the beach without dodging any drunken Christmas party goer and the entire place became dirty and unpleasant.

According to the council members, the entire chaos was due to the ‘visitors to the area’ and several citizens blamed the backpackers in the area for the huge mess. The lifeguards in the beach were forced to leave the premises around 7:30 pm local time on 25th December, Sunday, as it was becoming dangerous for them to stay. The NSW police also had to arrest three travellers on the same time for their antisocial behaviour.

Several other Sydney beaches already implemented alcohol bans to avoid this kind of devastation. That could be another reason behind the massive number of travellers to visit the Coogee beach for Christmas party.
