Expedia’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has been named Uber's chief executive.
The decision was made by Uber's board late on Sunday but the company has made no official announcement.
Several big names including Hewlett Packard boss Meg Whitman and General Electric chairman Jeff Immelt had been touted for the role.
He will replace ousted CEO Travis Kalanick who resigned in June. Khosrowshahi will face the difficult task of changing Uber's culture that has included sexual harassment and allegations of deceit and corporate espionage. Uber also is losing millions every quarter as it continues to expand and invest in self-driving cars.
Khosrowshahi was born in Iran in 1969, but he emigrated to the U.S. as a child in 1978 following the Iranian Revolution. After graduating with an electrical engineering degree from Brown University, Khosrowshahi joined Allen and Co as an analyst in 1991. His move into travel came when he joined USA Networks (now IAC) in 1998 and the company went on to acquire a majority stake in Expedia, then a subsidiary of Microsoft, in 2001 at a valuation of around $2 billion. Khosrowshahi took the reigns of Expedia in 2005.
