Ει βούλει καλώς ακούειν, μάθε καλώς λέγειν, μαθών δε καλώς λέγειν, πειρώ καλώς πράττειν, και ούτω καρπώση το καλώς ακούειν. (Επίκτητος)

Time Inc.’s TRAVEL + LEISURE today announced that Canada is the 2017 Destination of the Year. In the year of Canada’s sesquicentennial, the editors of TRAVEL + LEISURE considered the country’s sustained cultural relevance, as well as its blend of world-class cities, epic natural wonders and eclectic cuisine, in bestowing the top honor.
The TRAVEL + LEISURE Destination of the Year is the place the editors believe best captures the travel zeitgeist of the moment and is trending among travel enthusiasts. “In 2017 all signs pointed north,” according to TRAVEL + LEISURE editors, who also referenced “…Canada’s growing prominence as a global leader, a nation defined by tolerance and hope.” This year’s winner follows past honorees Portugal, named 2016 Destination of the Year, and Cuba, named 2015 Destination of the Year.

Produced by Mesmerise Global and Time Inc. Studios, the four-video series features vignettes that cover Victoria, Tofino, Clayoquot Sound and Bute Inlet. In addition, TRAVEL + LEISURE editors and ambassadors are on assignment throughout the entire country to share live updates across FacebookTwitter and Instagram via #DOTY2017.
TRAVEL + LEISURE Editor in Chief Nathan Lump said, “TRAVEL + LEISURE’s annual Destination of the Year spotlights the place that has most captured the attention of travelers and our editors over the past 12 months. The designation also signals the era in which we live. Canada celebrated its 150th birthday this year, of course, but the country has also distinguished itself during a particularly divisive time as a welcome unifier of communities and cultures. That it also delivers on some of the key attributes most appreciated by global travelers today—unspoiled natural environments, dynamic cities, creative food and art scenes—only makes the country more compelling at this moment.”
TRAVEL + LEISURE presents a comprehensive guide to the best of Canada now—from Vancouver to Montreal and more—on travelandleisure.com and in the cover story of the December issue, available on newsstands December 1.
