As many as 135 million Chinese tourists are expected to travel in the forthcoming three-day holiday for New Year’s Day marking a rise of 12.5% as compared with the same period last year.

The tropical city of Sanya, port city of Xiamen and a winter destination known as Harbin were categorized as the leading three destinations for the New Year holiday according to the China National Tourism Administration (NTA). The survey was carried out by the China Tourism Academy.

While a few tourists headed to Sanya on Hainan Island to escape the cold, others actually seek out the cold by visiting the north-eastern city of Harbin with a view to ski and also enjoy the spectacular snow views.

Xiamen is actually known for its mild climate, historic Hokkien culture and the unique colonial architecture on Gulangyu Island that had emerged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July.
